Who can live in a home without bunnies?  Obviously not us and a gorgeous little bunny called Fern has joined our family.

We had decided to get another bunny a few weeks before Fern joined our family, and Derek thought this time he would like a full size bunny.  We wanted our new bunny to be a house rabbit, but that would require a very large cage in order to house two big bunnies, so we decided to get one.  Of course bunnies need friends and rather than go to a pet shop an buy a single bunny, we decided to adopt a big old cuddly bunny, who was already on its own, from a rehoming centre.  Being sensible bunny parents, we wanted to get a cage and all our supplies first.  So we headed out to our local pet superstore to see what they had to offer.  We were very lucky to find a lovely big cage, there was only one problem, it was so big we couldn't fit it in our car!  There was another problem as well.  The pet store we visited had started an adoption centre where they housed and rehomed peoples unwanted pets.  They had a beautiful two year old Dutch bunny, Lucy, looking for a home.  She was beautiful, but of course we didn't have a cage so we couldn't take her home with us.  Naughtily we didn't leave empty handed, if you want to know who came home with us that day visit Berry's page, to read his story.

At home Lindsay found an online pet store that sold the cage we had found and we ordered it.  The cage arrived long before the weekend, so we made plans to head out and get Lucy.  Unfortunately  when we arrived at the pet store Lucy had already found a home.  We didn't have time to think about this, as Fern had taken her place.  Because of our previous bunny, Thumper, Derek has a terrible soft spot for natural coloured bunnies, so it was a done deal and Fern joined our family.

It took a few days for Fern to settle into her new home and once she had we realised what a large personality she had, that's a nice way of saying she's mischievous.

Despite originally planning for a larger bunny, Fern is very small.  She was tiny when we got her and because she was ten weeks old, we were warned she probably wouldn't grow much.  One thing is for sure, what she lacks in size she makes up for in energy.  Fern loves to jump up on the furniture, and jumping off them onto higher objects!

We had planned to let our new bunny out in the garden, but not until next year when the weather warmed up.  With Fern we realised she wouldn't wait.  Rather than make her wait for us to build her an outdoor home, we found one on the internet.  Our chosen bunny run is actually a chicken coop, but it works just as well for a bunny home.  And it has the all important door, so Fern can get out and run around the garden, which is very important for us and her.

Depending on the temperature Fern spends at least two hours a day in the garden, sometimes six hours, and we always sit with her when she is out of her run so that she can charge around the garden safely and burn off some of her energy.  Most of our plants are losing their leaves, or at least not looking their best, with the cold weather coming.  Not that it bothers Fern, she is very happy taste testing everything and picking her favourites.

We can't wait for summer when both Fern and us can spend more time outside.  Until then we are giving her lots of time to play in the house and climb on our furniture.

November 2007, woops we have had our first mishap with Fern.  Fortunately it's nothing serious, but she did give us quite a fright.  Fern is a very bouncy and inquisitive little bunny and she loves nothing more than to get her nose where it doesn't belong, in this case it was under the gate at the side of our house.  We had blocked the gap underneath the gate off so she couldn't squeeze under, but this wasn't enough to stop our nosy little bunny from sticking her nose through the very small gap.  In doing so she managed to catch the top of her head.  She ended up with a bald spot and a very nasty scab on her head.

We are pleased to say that the scab healed up nicely and all her fur is growing back.  We have also completely blocked off the gate, so she can't get anywhere near it again.  Silly bunny.
