House Rabbits:

Our little kitten, Inkie, joined our family a few weeks ago.  Although Fawn was friends with both our previous cats, Treacle and Custard, Derek and I were a bit worried that a boisterous kitten might be a bit much for him.  We needn’t have worried.

Fawn thinks Inkie is wonderful, we’ve never seen him so happy and bouncy.  She harasses him while he eats, chases him and even tries to wallop him when he passes, and Fawn loves it!  He really does.  And if he doesn’t appreciate Inkie’s attentions, he turns on her and chases her off – it’s pretty wonderful to see.

Bunnies look like such sweet little animals, but they know what they like and they are not afraid to stand up for themselves, that’s what makes them so special.

I’ve been getting a bit concerned that Fawn was bored and lonely. Our cat Custard, who fawn spent a lot of time with, passed away last month and I think Fawn has been missing him. Both Derek and I work from home, so we get to spend a lot of time with Fawn, but we had noticed that he wasn’t spending as much time with us in the office as he used to. Instead we would often find him under our bed asleep or huddled in a corner of his room. He hadn’t been playing with his bunny toys as much either and it was worrying me.

Custard & Fawn

Custard & Fawn

I guess our cats are now at the age where they’re not very interested in chasing smaller animals, and our bunnies can sense it too.

Custard likes to sleep in a spare bedroom and Fawn lives, and has the run of the, upstairs so it was inevitable the two were going to meet. At first Fawn was a bit nervous of Custard and he would run and hide in his own room, and Custard would just ignore him and go to bed.

Fawn took a little time to settle into his new home. He was very shy and hesitant at first and we struggled to even get him to come out of his cage an play, when he did he preferred to hang around under our bed. I’m pleased to say that he is starting to build his confidence now though, and is turning into a very sweet and affectionate little rabbit.

Everyday Fawn’s confidence is growing and he becomes more adventurous with his surroundings and us. At the moment he seems very interested in the stairs. We are hoping he will learn to use them by himself and then he can have the run of the whole house. Who knows what kind of mischief he’ll get up to then.

After we’d known our little bunny, Fern, for a few months it became apparent she wasn’t going to be a quiet little house bunny. No, Fern wanted to live outside and she made sure we knew it. We had hoped that as a house bunny Fern would be happy with our company, but outside in the garden we were worried she would be lonely. So, along came our second dwarf bunny Fawn.

We were at a large pet superstore that we don’t normally visit. Unfortunately they are the only place in our local area that sold something I needed for my rats. Fawn was this little black bundle in the middle of a good-sized bunny area, the problem was all the other bunnies were bigger than him and he looked terrified. Derek, being the big softie he is about bunnies, couldn’t resist.

Fern's new outdoor home

Fern's new outdoor home

We had planned to let Fern out in the garden next summer, when the weather warmed up, but Fern had other ideas. Being a house bunny wasn’t exciting enough for her. It started off with her climbing on our bed, then progressed to climbing on the furniture in our bedroom where she discovered our house plants and started digging them up.

So we have given in and bought Fern an outdoor run. We had really wanted to build her something ourselves, but the weather was too cold and Fern obviously was not going to wait. Our chosen bunny run is actually a chicken coop, but it works just as well for a bunny home. It is not as big as we would have liked, but it does have an all important bunny door, so Fern can run free around our garden and hopefully burn off some of her energy.

Fern may be a little bunny but she really is a handful.

I have no idea if it’s because she is a female bunny, as we’ve never had a girl bunny before, or whether she is just bonkers, but we don’t know what to do with our little rabbit. So far she has been jumping on our bed, trying to dig in the duvet, jumping on the furniture, digging in plant pots and eating the houseplants.

Her latest bit of naughtiness is in the evening. We always let her out at bedtime, while we lie in bed and read, but she has started jumping on the bed and tugging Derek’s magazine off him, demanding his attention. Not very relaxing, but it is cute :-).

Our little Fern has been having trouble jumping in and out of her cage and she keeps getting her toes caught in the open doorway. Rather than wait for Fern to hurt herself, Derek has made her a fancy wooden ramp, so Fern can hop in and out of her cage whenever she wants.

Fern helped throughout the process, of course. Keeping an eye on what we were doing and even trying to pinch one of the legs and a screw driver. She is a very bossy bunny.

Thumper & Flower were Derek’s moment of weakness, we went to stock up on supplies and came home with two bunnies.

Flower & Thumper's indoor bunny home

Flower & Thumper

As Mars & Jupiter already occupied the garden we got to discover the fun of house bunnies. Flower & Thumper have a room upstairs and a large indoor bunny run, with a bunny door so they can easily come out and play. Derek made our bunny run, taking great care to listen to what the bunnies wanted. Thumper insisted on windows so he could keep and eye on what was going on. We used large cardboard boxes as tunnels and as Thumper likes to climb on things Derek made him a platform. With Thumper’s love of climbing we also had to fit a lid to the run to stop him jumping out.

Having house bunnies is a great experience. They are a lovely little pair, who entertain us with their antics. Flower is very sweet it is hard to do anything without him coming to help, he enjoys standing on our feet. He is not as adventuress as Thumper, and he often getting left out when Thumper goes climbing.
