Hello, we are Derek and Lindsay and we live in Suffolk, England. Over the years we have managed to fill our home with a variety of animal friends, including bunnies, cats, gerbils, guinea pigs and far too many rats.

Lindsay launched this website in 2001 and back then it was solely dedicated to our pets. In February of 2009 we re-launched the site in the format you see now. As well as continuing to feature ongoing updates about our pets, we have added a selection of short stories and the out and about page.

Best friends

Best friends

11 August 2010 by Lindsay

Fawn and Treacle have become such good friends, they are like an old married couple!  It is all a bit daft really, we have two bunnies that won’t get along, but both want to be friends with our cat, Treacle. Poor Treacle is quite old now, and Fawn gets very excited when Treacle is around, ...

Goodbye to baby Bramble

Goodbye to baby Bramble

25 June 2010 by Lindsay

I’ve been meaning to update about out sweet little guy Bramble for some time now.  He has done us so proud over the last two years.  Having been the poorliest of all his siblings, there were times when we thought he wouldn’t make it to adulthood, never mind old age.  It has been a ...

Smudge's new roommates

Smudge's new roommates

20 April 2010 by Lindsay

It was silly to have little old Smudge living alone in her rather large cage, especially with two new boisterous young rats in the house.  We didn’t want to move Smudge from her home – even though she spends all her time in her rat igloo – it just didn’t seem fair to her after ...

Bad cat breath

Bad cat breath

30 March 2010 by Lindsay

Oh my goodness, Treacle did have bad stinky breath!  It was not pleasant, so we took him down the vet and booked him a dental. He had his dental a week ago yesterday and came through fine.  He was a bit wobbly and spaced out from the anaesthetic when we got him home, but it wore off by the next ...

Shy-guy Chestnut has passed away

Shy-guy Chestnut has passed away

29 March 2010 by Lindsay

I’m very sad to say our shy little guy Chestnut passed away yesterday afternoon.  It was a very sad end to what had been an exciting weekend of new rattie arrivals.  His passing was very peaceful, and though we don’t know exactly how old he was, I’m pretty sure he had reached a good ...

Our three unexpected arrivals

Our three unexpected arrivals

28 March 2010 by Lindsay

When we were at the pet store yesterday collecting our little girls Tula and Tilly, I caught sight of a beautiful big boy rat.  He obviously wasn’t a baby and I couldn’t resist having a little look at him.  There were two other rats in the tank with him, though I only saw their noses ...

Two new little rats

Two new little rats

27 March 2010 by Lindsay

I admit we weren’t planning any new additions to our family, if anything we were thinking of taking a break from keeping rats. We have adopted a lot of rats over the past 12 months, many of them old or with health problems, and devoted a lot of time and energy caring for them.  With so many ...

Our shy guy, Berry, has died

Our shy guy, Berry, has died

07 March 2010 by Lindsay

While loosing Berry is another blow for our family, I can say that he passed away peacefully from old age.  A few days ago we noticed we were seeing less of him, and then yesterday he just wasn’t himself and we knew we were going to lose him.  While it made us very sad to know he was going ...

Our funny little Muffin has left us

Our funny little Muffin has left us

05 March 2010 by Lindsay

More bad news I’m afraid.  Muffin had what we initially thought was an abscess on the side of her face.  The lump came up very quickly and burst within a couple of days, as you would expect.  We immediately started bathing it with salt water and giving her Baytril.  Not all of the ...

Goodbye to our brave little girl, Apricot

Goodbye to our brave little girl, Apricot

03 March 2010 by Lindsay

As I’ve said before, Apricot had been very ill for a long time and over the past month her condition had deteriorated.  She had been scratching her skin a lot more, and she had quite a few open wounds.  They weren’t deep or anything scary, but they must have been causing her some ...
